Remember when your mother told you “If it sounds too good to be true….”? That old saying rings true the supposed “No Cut Tummy Tuck.” Like so many other hyped treatments or procedures being toted in the cosmetic surgery industry, this is another example where marketing jargon is used to promote a treatment.
A Closer Look at the Tummy Tuck
The “Tuck” part of a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) procedures is where a plastic surgeon tightens the supporting tissues below the skin. I call this layer of tissue that attaches our skin to our body structures beneath it (muscles and bones) the “body suit”. There isn’t a cosmetic surgery procedure that will significantly rejuvenation this Body Suit tissue without a surgical lift or tuck, which requires an incision.
Sure, there are many times we avoid a Tummy Tuck when both the skin and the deeper tissues of the Body Suit are considered of good or excellent quality. But there is no “No Cut” procedure that can make tissues of inferior quality, such as loose tissue or thin, stretched skin, magically tighten.
So What is the No Cut Tummy Tuck?
Upon closer scrutiny treatments that are being advertised as “No Cut” Tummy Tuck procedures are most often a form of Liposuction, typically using a laser Liposuction device. Here’s where that marketing jargon comes in, since Liposuction in any form is in no way a type of Tummy Tuck procedure. It’s a clever way to market the treatment since a Tummy Tuck is known to give a patient a flat, toned midsection with significant tissue rejuvenation. Tag the words “No Cut” to the name and provide perceived benefits. However, whatever branding you want to tag on it, medically it is still not an Abdominoplasty in any shape or form and will not provide the same results.
I truly hope that there aren’t any American Board of Plastic Surgery surgeons marketing the “No Cut Tummy Tuck” technique. At the very least any physician should be including a big disclaimer about how only some patients will be candidates. Have you heard of a plastic surgery procedure or technique that you would like to know the truth behind? Ask me.
