“It hurts right here.”
“ The left one is bigger than the right.”
“Is this normal?”
Each night after surgery, Dr. Slenkovich places nightly follow-up calls to post-surgical patients to check on their healing progress and to answer any questions. He frequently discusses their concerns about certain areas, including swelling, bleeding and shape change. But with our new video chat capabilities, patients can actually show the Denver plastic surgeon “where it hurts.”
After a quick tutorial in the recovery area of our ambulatory surgery center, select surgery patients are sent home with an iPhone 4 and a set of instructions explaining how to use the FaceTime function. That evening Dr. Slenkovich calls the iPhone and starts a video chat conversation with the patient and his or her caregiver. Patients can use the iPhone to show Dr. Slenkovich their incisions, wound dressings or any particular areas of discomfort. This allows Dr. Slenkovich to give better feedback and answer questions in more detail than during a simple phone conversation.
FaceTime is especially effective during the first 24 hours after surgery, since patients commonly have the most questions about their initial healing during that time.
FaceTime video chatting is another example of the extra steps Dr. Slenkovich and Colorado Plastic Surgery Center take to promote patient-physician communication.
