PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, a natural product created from a small sample of your blood drawn at the beginning of the procedure. The blood sample is placed in a centrifuge that separates the blood into multiple layers, one of those being the PRP. The PRP has an abundance of growth factors that are involved in wound healing and natural tissue growth. When injected into the scalp, it sends signals to your body to regenerate the area—including your hair follicles.
We start the PRP treatments for your scalp and hair by first drawing your blood, much like when you have your blood drawn for lab tests. The platelet-rich plasma is then separated out with a centrifuge machine for use in your treatment. Topical or local anesthesia may be administered to your scalp before the procedure. The collagen-rich PRP is strategically injected into the areas of your scalp with thinning hair. After the procedure, you can return home with a few post-treatment instructions to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment, which could include avoiding sun exposure to the area, taking certain medications, or using other hair treatments.
Results become visible within about six months, especially if you have had a full course of treatments. Most patients are recommended to have PRP treatments four times, four to six weeks apart, for best results. Afterward, maintenance treatments may be necessary every year or more frequently.
