Microneedling is a medical grade skincare treatment designed to revitalize the skin using its natural ability to heal itself by stimulating the body’s own collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, skin laxity and scarring.
What are the treatment benefits?
Microneedling is safe and effective for all skin types and produces natural results with minimal discomfort and minimal downtime. It can be used on all parts of the body, including face, neck, decollete, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back. Treatment can improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation as well as uneven skin tone, acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks.
What treatment options do you offer?
We are pleased to offer both Hyaluronic Acid and Growth Factor as treatment options for our microneedling sessions. Hyaluronic Acid is a completely safe and natural substance that naturally occurs in our bodies. It is applied during treatment to boost hydration in the skin. Growth Factor promotes improved conditions for healing and skin cell regeneration with reduced inflammation. During your skincare consultation, our aesthetician will recommend the best option for treating your desired concerns.
How is the procedure done?
Microneedling – Also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), micropen or automated microneedling – utilizes a motorized pen with 12 tiny micro-needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This process triggers new collagen and elastin production resulting in smoother, firmer and younger-looking skin. There are several different brands of microneedling systems. We utilize the Eclipse Micropen Elite™ at Colorado Plastic Surgery Center.
During your treatment, our licensed medical aesthetician will attach a sterile, cartridge containing the 12 tiny micro-needles to the applicator pen. A thin layer of numbing agent is applied to the skin initially for your comfort. Next, a topical gel is applied to the skin and customized settings are selected for each patient’s unique needs. The micropen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered. The total treatment time is typically 30-45 minutes.
What does a micropen treatment feel like?
While some areas of the skin are more sensitive than others, the speed of the needles within the tip make the treatment more comfortable and has been compared to a light sandpaper being moved across the skin.
What is the downtime after a micropen treatment?
The total healing time depends on the area treated and number of overlapping passes selected for each customized treatment. Immediately after treatment, there may be a mild redness to the skin, similar to a light sunburn. A hydrating anti-aging mask is applied to reduce this redness and speed up the healing process. Any remaining redness passes throughout the day of the treatment. Some patients heal completely in 24 hours and others notice slight sensitivity for between 2-4 days. A light mineral makeup can be used to cover initial redness if desired.
Q&A With Dr. Slenkovich
Learn MoreWhen will I notice results?
Many patients notice an immediate glow to their skin and continue to see visible changes over the next 6-8 weeks. Results can keep improving up to six months following treatment as collagen production continues.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically a series of 2-3 microneedling treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart is recommended to achieve optimal results. Some patients may only require a single treatment once a year to see noticeable improvement in their skin. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, or acne scars, a typical course of treatment consists of 6-8 sessions that are spaced 6 weeks apart.
Do you offer treatment packages?
Colorado Plastic Surgery Center offers packages include 3 or 4 sessions with either the Hyaluronic Acid or Growth Factor treatment options. Each of our package options comes with a post treatment kit for at-home care.
