Choosing to undergo breast augmentation is a significant decision in and of itself. However, when you begin to throw in all the other options (saline or silicone breast implants, placement, incision location, size, etc.) it can easily become overwhelming. The most common questions I hear during breast augmentation consultations are related to how she will look after the breast surgery.
Breast Shape is My Responsibility/ Breast Size is Yours
In my Denver based plastic surgery practice, we feel that a critical component of the consultation process is the examination. During that examination I take extensive measurement including your breast shape, chest width, breast width, natural breast size, etc. As I tell all of my potential breast augmentation patients, it is my responsibility to explain what shape I would anticipate for her body and breasts. I then follow up by reviewing before and after pictures of other breast augmentation patients that have had surgery for comparison and examples of what shape I would anticipate. It’s then my responsibility during surgery to place the implants to provide the most natural shape for her body.
For size, however, it’s really your decision. Based on my measurements during the examination I will make a set of recommended sizes as a starting point. The breast augmentation patient can use these sizes as the initial option for implant sizers. But ultimately I rely on feedback from her to help in determining the actual size that will be placed during surgery. Which size of implant you have placed during surgery is a personal choice made based on your desired breast size.
